St Stephen’s College, situated on the scenic Stanley Peninsula in Hong Kong, provides boarding for secondary students within its spacious, historic campus. Boarders return to the dormitories after school and enjoy moments of leisure with roommates before supper, or gather around to share with each other what they had been doing during the day. Many boarders consider the boarding houses their second home and develop a close relationship with each other that lasts years after graduation. We are often able to share in the joy of the experiences of the old boys and girls, when they visit their Alma Mater, uncovering fond memories of their boarding life. It is not at all rare for fellow boarders to become lifelong friends.

There are six dormitories on campus, namely East Wing, West Wing, Martin Hostel, North House, and College House (A & B) offering 454 boarding places to boys and girls who, whilst living separately, share the same dining hall. Boarders leave school for home on either Friday evening or Saturday morning and return for supper on Sunday. There are two study sessions every evening from 7:15 – 9:30pm when boarders are to complete their school assignments, do revision, and prepare for the next school day. A tutorial class supervised by teachers is arranged for Secondary 1 and 2 boarders in the first session. Extended study time after 10pm for boarders who are studying in Secondary 3 and above is allowed.

Boarders are also grouped into wards, each led by an Assistant Warden who acts as their guardian, tutor and counsellor, supervising them and taking care of their daily lives. Assistant Wardens are resident teachers who arrange regular outings and activities for boarders as well.

We believe that boarding at school is beneficial to the personal development of our students. It presents opportunities to develop independence, self-discipline and self-management, and foster communication, problem-solving and collaborative skills. The College joined the Direct Subsidy Scheme in September 2008, as such, the Mandatory Boarding Programme was implemented for S1, S3 and S5 students which includes a focus on themes ranging from effective study and thinking skills, leadership training, careers and further education guidance.

In 2015-2016 the annual boarding fee for regular boarders is $67,000. Since the tuition fee for Secondary 1, 3 and 5 students already includes charges for the Mandatory Boarding Programme, the boarding fee for Secondary 1, 3 and 5 students who wish to board throughout the whole academic year is just $62,600, $63,700 and $64,800 respectively while the boarding fee for 2016-2017 is subject to change. Application forms are available on the website and from the General Office of the College and forms for the new academic year will be available in January 2016 and should be submitted before the deadline (usually Mid May). If the number of applicants exceeds the number of boarding places available, priority will be given to those who live far away from the College.
